CSU Women top Wyo to move on in WNIT

Posted Mar 23, 2003

The fourth meeting this season between Colorado State and Wyoming in women’s basketball went the same way as the last two did, a Colorado State victory.

The Rams won a 73-64 decision against the Cowgirls in the second round of the WNIT this afternoon in Moby Arena to improve to 20-12 overall, while the Cowgirls season ends at 18-12.

Junior forward Joy Jenkins led the Rams from the bench with 18 points, nine in each half. Senior center Shannon Strecker ended the game with 16 points and a team-best six rebounds after scoring 14 in the first half. Senior guard Katie Borton added 14 and senior forward Ashley Augspurger chipped in 13 points and had a team-high five assists.

“We had four players in double figures,” said Colorado State head coach Chris Denker. “That’s really good balance. The players stepped it up and decided to get it done (after the Cowgirls tied the game at 39-39 in the second half). We had some big defensive stops.”

Wyoming senior forward Carrie Bacon led all players with 22 points, marking the fifth straight game she surpassed 20 points. Sophomore guard Ashley Elliott was the other Cowgirl in double figures, scoring 16. Bacon also led all players with 10 rebounds and Elliott had a game-high six assists.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Carrie Bacon,” Denker continued. “She is an amazing player and did a lot for Wyoming.”

Colorado State will move on to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. The Rams will face either Ball State or Missouri sometime next week. The two teams square off Monday evening at Missouri at 7:00 p.m. (Central).
