Lubick to be honored June 10

In 10 seasons as head football coach at Colorado State University, Sonny Lubick has earned national respect and acclaim for the achievements of the Rams' program.

But Lubick's influence runs far deeper than just Colorado State's football program. Since arriving in 1993, he has guided the Rams to six conference titles and seven bowl appearances, both totals among the top figures nationally over that span. While Lubick is a success on the field, he's had even more influence off the gridiron. Along with wife Carol Jo, the couple has three grown children each successful in their own rite. Eldest son Matt is the Rams' wide receivers coach. Daughter Michelle lives in Chicago with husband Gerard Boyle and the couple has an 18-month-old son, Matthew Gerard. Son Marc is on the player development staff of the St. Louis Rams. Lubick is one of six "Fathers of the Year" as chosen by the American Diabetes Association's Colorado Chapter. He will be honored during the group's annual awards dinner Tuesday, June 10 at the Denver Hyatt Regency Hotel. A reception that night begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7. Lubick has ushered in the most successful era in Colorado State football history. Along with his success on the field, he's been very actively locally within the community and on campus. For instance, he remains a central figure in local Multiple Sclerosis and St. Jude's Children's Hospital annual events, as well as the Fort Collins' Community Foundation fund raising. CSU's athletic department has for several years sponsored a community outreach program, RamForce, in which student-athletes, coaches, and staff members visit local elementary and junior high schools to mentor and provide guidance for the youth of Northern Colorado. Lubick is one of the group's most active members, spending time in schools and activity centers whenever possible. Back to the football field, the Rams in 2002 won the Mountain West Conference championship for the third time in four seasons and played in a fourth straight bowl game, extending the school record.
