AztecReport.com hands out grades for the San Diego State players as they took on Missouri State.

San Diego State 60 Missouri State 44

Starters

Xavier Thames – 36 mins, 11 pts, 3 rebs, 5 ast, 2 blks, 1 stls, 2 TO

X had to play almost the entire game with backup point guard Winston Shepard not available. While he struggled from the field (3/12), Thames was effective by being smart aggressive. He attacked when the opportunity presented it self and was able to get his teammates involved if it wasn't. He also played fantastic defense on the outside. (B+)

Chase Tapley – 31 mins, 6 pts, 2 rebs, 0 ast, 1 blk, 3 stl, 4 TO

It was a rough day for Tapley who just couldn't get anything going on offense. Like most of the team he struggled shooting (2/9) and had numerous unnecessary turnovers that were very uncharacteristic from the senior. He still earns a passing grade for a knockdown three late in the game and harassed the guards of Missouri State on defense. (C-)

Jamaal Franklin – 35 mins, 22 pts, 12 rebs, 2 ast, 3 blk, 3 stl, 7 TO

Just looking at the key offensive stats of points (22), rebounds (12), shooting performance (6/14) and free throw line (9/11); you would think Franklin had a dominant performance. While you must love his aggressiveness but at times it's a bit too much and that was the case today. He had a lot mistakes due to letting the emotion of the game take over. Franklin had a flagrant foul, technical foul and turned the ball over 7 times. But hey the positives clearly outweighed the negatives "today" as he carried the load offensively especially in the first half. (B)

J.J. O'Brien – 30 mins, 6 pts, 8 rebs, 0 ast, 1 blk, 0 stl, 1 TO

It was a quiet game statistically for O'Brien but he played well in his 30 minutes of action. There were times he was the largest man on the floor for the Aztecs so he was relied on heavily to manage the boards and he did that especially on the offensive glass with 5. He was able to be his normal playmaking self due to being the big man but his versatility can't be understated, as it will show all season long. (B)

Deshawn Stephens – 18 mins, 2 pts, 5 rebs, 0 ast, 0 blk, 1 stl, 0 TO

This was matchup coming in that most though Stephens could have a big game. That wasn't the case due to foul trouble, totaling only 18 minutes. The senior should be able to take advantage of the shorter Missouri State team but never had the full opportunity. (D+)

Bench

James Rahon – 26 mins, 10 pts, 4 rebs, 0 ast, 0 blk, 0 stl, 1 TO

With the team struggling to hit a shot and the bench depleted, it was Rahon who stepped up late in the game with a timely triple to get a late run going. The senior also played solid perimeter defense. (B)

Dwayne Polee – 17 mins, 3 pts, 4 rebs, 1 ast, 1 blk, 1 stl, 1 TO

Polee only played 17 minutes but showed flashes of what he can bring to this Aztecs team this season. His lone bucket of the game was a quick move on the perimeter that he took all the way to cup showing off his athletic advantage against MSU. He attacked the glass hard and played tough defense as well. (B-)

Skylar Spencer – 7 mins, 0 pts, 5 rebs, 0 ast, 1 blk, 0 stl, 0 TO

Spencer only played 7 minutes despite Stephens battling foul trouble. He rebounded the ball well with 4 offensive boards. On those boards he struggled to get a solid foundation to go back up to the bucket. (C)

Teacher Notes

1) SDSU ended the game with a +18 rebound margin (52-34), 21 of the 52 rebounds were offensive. The squad is 46-5 in the last 51 games when outrebounding their opponent.

2) The Aztecs held Missouri State to 44 total points on 16-of-57 shooting (28.1%) and forced 15 turnovers.

3) San Diego State continued to struggle from outside as they missed its first 10 three-point field goal attempts of the game, finishing the game 4-of-22. The team shot 19-of-59 from the field (32.2%) in the game.
