Lobos split two in Thanksgiving Tournament

The New Mexico women's basketball team found mixed results during its annual Thanksgiving Tournament Friday and Saturday at The Pit. The Lobos did well against its first opponent, North Texas from the Sun Belt Conference Friday night.But New Mexico found the going to be much tougher in the championship game against nationally ranked Georgia, losing to the Lady Bulldogs Saturday night.

New Mexico 81, North Texas 59: Senior Deeva Vaughn scored a game-high 23 points, freshman Bryce Owens added 17 points and six assists and senior Jourdan Erskine pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds as UNM opened on a 11-0 run. The Lobos held the Eagles scoreless until the 16:28 mark of the first half but UNT rallied to take a 19-17 lead six minutes later. New Mexico (5-0) closed the half with a 9-2 run and took a 39-35 lead into the half.

North Texas (0-4) opened with a three-pointer and UNM responded with a 17-4 run to take a 56-42 lead and never trailed again in the contest. Loryn Goodwin led UNT with 16 points while BreeAnna Dawkins and Laura McCoy added 11 and 10 points respectively. Sara Halasz added 14 points and six rebounds for UNM while Whitney Johnson came off the bench to score 10 points. The Lobos shot 50.8% (31 of 61), 37.5% on treys (6 of 16) and 59% on free throws (13 of 22). North Texas only shot 36.5% (23 of 63) from the field and was outrebounded by an amazing 50-27 margin.

NO. 8/9 Georgia 72, NEW MEXICO 42: The nationally-ranked Lady Bulldogs (7-0) from the highly regarded Southeastern Conference opened on a 16-3 run and the Lobos went nine minutes without a basket in the first half as New Mexico (5-1) managed just 17 points in the first half against Georgia's high-pressure defense. The Lady Bulldogs led 40-17 at halftime and opened the second half on a 9-0 run. But the Lobos ended the game well with a 12-4 run. The loss was New Mexico's first of the season.

Sara Halasz led New Mexico with 14 points and added four rebounds and Caroline Durbin scored 12 points and pulled in a team-high nine rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs were paced by Tiaria Griffin, who scored 17 points and Jasmine Hassell who added 15 points as Georgia got scoring from 11 of 13 players and shot 47% for the game (31-66) compared to UNM's 29.4% (15 of 51). The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded UNM 41-33 and forced the Lobos into 24 turnovers
