Instead, the Wildcats went the route of making miracles.
Austin Hill scored a two-yard touchdown, Arizona recovered an onside kick, and scored another touchdown to defeat Nevada 49-48 on Saturday.
Nevada started the drive on its own 25-yard line with an 11-yard run by Cody Fajardo. After a short pass, Stefphon Jefferson gained 12 on the ground and picked up eight more yards on the next carry. After a five-yard run, Fajardo found Brandon Wimberly for eight yards. Fajardo proceeded to gain 13 on the ground and Jefferson then picked up a 16-yard touchdown run with the extra point making it 7-0 with 12:12 left in the first quarter.
Arizona tried to answer on its own 25 and Ka'Deem Carey gained five yards after a false start. Matt Scott then connected with Dan Buckner for 11 yards, but the drive stalled after a four-yard run by Carey and Nevada started on its own 15.
Nevada started with a nine-yard pass from Fajardo to Aaron Bradley and Wimberly gained 12 in the air on the next play. Two plays later, Bradley got 11 yards on an option and Jefferson picked up eight more. However, the Arizona defense stood up on the next few plays and forced a punt after causing Jefferson to lose two yards on the ground.
After Arizona went three and out, Nevada took over on the 48-yard line and two plays into the drive, Wimberly gained seven on the ground. Fajardo then picked up five and two yards on consecutive carries before Jefferson went for 12 and three on the ground. On the next play, Zach Sudfeld was open for a 17-yard touchdown, as the extra point made it 14-0 with 4:43 left.
Arizona fumbled the ensuing kickoff and on the first play of the drive, Fajardo found an open Sudfeld for the 28-yard touchdown with the extra point making it 21-0.
Arizona started on its own 28-yard line with an eight-yard pass to Wharton followed by a five-yard run by Carey. Two plays later, Richards caught a nine-yard pass and Austin Hill added 14 two more plays after that. Scott then picked up six yards on the ground and after he picked up the first down a few plays later, Carey gained 21 yards for the touchdown as the extra point made it 21-7.
Arizona forced a third down on Nevada's next drive, but Fajardo was able to pick up the first down with 18 yards on the ground. Two plays later, however, Shaq Richardson came up big as he picked up his first interception of the season and put Arizona on its own 29-yard line to end the first quarter.
Carey picked up11 on the ground to start the quarter and two plays later, Buckner gained 21 in the air. Carey then gained 24 more on the ground and two plays later, a nine-yard completion to Richards set up a one-yard touchdown by Scott with the extra point making it 21-14 in favor of Nevada.
Nevada took over on its own 25-yard line with an 11-yard pass to Bradley and three plays later, bot a 17-yard pass to Turner on third down. Once again though, the Nevada drive stalled with a turnover, as a Jefferson fumble gave Arizona the ball back on its own 41-yard line.
The Wildcats started with an eight-yard run by Carey followed by one for 14 yards. Two plays later, Richards caught a 21-yard pass and Carey countered with six yards as Scott gained nine to the one-yard line on the next play. Carey was able to pick up the touchdown just one play after and the extra point tied the game at 21 with 10:23 left in the first half.
The scoring continued on the next drive. As Fajardo gained nine yards two plays in and followed with 18 more on the ground. Jefferson then gained a combined 13 yards on two carries and two plays later, Fajardo had consecutive carries of five yards before Jefferson ran it in from 14 yards out and the extra-point made it 28-21 with 5:57 left in the first half.
Arizona started on its own 25-yard line with a 28-yard pass from Scott to Hill. Carey gained four on the ground and two plays later added six before picking up 28 yards. On the next play, he ran it in from eight yards out for his third touchdown of the game with the extra-point tying it at 28 with 4:22 left in the first half.
Nevada started its drive on its own 25 with two runs for a combined 13 yards by Jefferson. Two plays later, Fajardo grabbed 12 yards on the ground and gained 13 three plays after that. Two plays later, Fajardo connected with Joseph Huber for 13 yards and Jefferson followed with seven on the ground.
Fajardo gained four more yards on the ground a few plays later and Nevada was called for holding on the next play. Arizona was able to force a 27-yard field attempt as the Wolf Pack went into the half up 31-28.
Arizona went three and out to start the half and Nevada took over on its own 30. The Wolf Pack started the drive with a 17-yard pass to Turner and Jefferson followed with a total of 20 yards on three carries. A few plays later, Fajardo found a wide open Turner for the 33-yard touchdown with the extra-point making it 38-28 early in the third quarter.
Needing an answer, Arizona got 17 combined yards by Carey before Scott found Hill for 23 yards in the air. On the next play, Scott made an awful decision and threw an interception to give Nevada the ball and momentum.
Nevada got six yards from Nick Hale on its first play and the Wolf Pack picked away at Arizona's defense before Hale gained 25 yards on the ground to the UA 32-yard line. Two plays later, Fajardo hit Wimberly for 11 yards and a few after that, Arizona got called for targeting, leading to a Fajardo touchdown run with an extra-point that made it 45-28 with 1:33 left in the third quarter.
Arizona desperately needed a score starting on its own 11-yard line and was able to get 14 yards from Hill to basically end the third quarter. Two plays into the fourth quarter, Hill caught a 63-yard touchdown pass and the extra point made it 45-35 with a little under 15 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats were then able to force a three and out and took over on their own 25-yard line with 12:49 left in the fourth. Carey started the drive with a three-yard run and Richards picked up 10 on the next play before Wharton added 12 of his own. Wharton got a five-yard pass from Scott and after an incomplete pass, Richards picked up four yards and Scott converted on fourth and one.
After a four-yard run by Carey, the drive stalled and on fourth and seven with a little under ten minutes left, Scott threw another interception on a pass intended for Wharton.
Nevada took possession on its own 38-yard line and was able to pick up a first down with a 13-yard pass to Wimberly. However, the drive stalled and the Wildcats took the ball on their own five-yard line with seven minutes left.
Arizona was unable to get anything going on its drive and punted, giving Nevada the ball back with about six minutes left and basically sealing the game, or so it seemed.
With Nevada leading 48-35 with 1:48 left, Arizona took possession on its own 25-yard line. Scott found Wharton for 14 yards and Slavin for 12 before adding a pass interference call to get to Nevada's 27.
Carey rushed for four yards and Slavin added nine before Arizona got another pass interference call to get to the Nevada two-yard line where Scott hit Hill for the touchdown. The extra-point made it 48-42 with 40 seconds left and with Arizona needing an onside kick.
The Wildcats recovered the onside kick on their own 49 and picked up 28 yards with a pass to Wharton followed by an Austin Hill grab for 21 yards. On the next play, Scott hit Slavin for two yards and the extra-point gave the Wildcats the win.
