Holland Out for the Year

Denver Post
Posted Oct 17, 2004

San Diego - Justin Holland flew back home with his Colorado State teammates late Saturday night, and the quarterback will have surgery Monday on his broken left fibula.

Holland emerged from the locker room after halftime on crutches with his lower leg in a temporary cast.

Without a TV or radio in the locker room, he was on his cellphone with his brother getting updates on the game before going out to watch the Rams' 21-17 win over San Diego State.

Holland tried to take his mind off his misery by helping backup freshman Caleb Hanie.

"This is his team," Hanie said. "I just hope I can fill in for him."

Holland was hurt dumping off a pass to running back Uldis Jaunarajs with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter. The severity was evident when he declined an Aztec defender's offer to help him up from the field.

He was taken to the locker room in Qualcomm Stadium on a cart.

"They tried to pick me up and I said, 'No, man. My leg is broken,"' Holland said.

Holland was 5-of-9 passing for 18 yards. He finishes the season 78-of-126 for 952 yards and three touchdowns with eight interceptions.

The former Parade All-American from Bear Creek High School played in barely six games as a fourth-year junior.

Hanie lost his redshirt against Montana State. The move was designed to give him experience as well as get him work in practice in case of an injury to Holland.

Offensive coordinator Dan Hammerschmidt said Joey Kearney moves to the No. 2 position and walk-on junior-college transfer Billy Farris will get more work at the No. 3 position.
